In tribute to Max Huber on the hundredth anniversary of his birth, Poltrona Frau has produced a duo of rugs based on drawings of unproduced works sketched by the Swiss artist and graphic designer in 1936 and 1947. 'Billie', based on a 1936 sketch, is notable for its application of lines, and a distinct, soulful rhythm that recalls the world famous jazz singer Billie Holliday, and is a fitting homage to Huber who is said to have been deeply inspired and influenced by the genre. Tangibly, it manifests here by way of two bold graphics that take up almost the entire surface of the rug and are highly calibrated in every single detail. Comprising a circle and a vertical line, these two elements introduce a strong formal balance and notable visual impact, while their placement on a neutral background further compounds the rigorous, almost constructivist design. Handmade from 50% wool, 50% linen, the rug is hand-spun on wooden looms using the Tibetan knot technique and features a saddle leather label hand-sewn on its back, which is stamped with the Poltrona Frau logo. Two strips of fabric are additionally attached to the reverse to keep the corners rigid, and are embroidered with Max Huber's signature.
