Created by Japanese brand Nendo in collaboration with Antwerp-based label Valerie Objects, 'Giftbox' is a beautifully sculptural cutlery set. Comprising four pieces each of a table knife, table fork, a tablespoon and a teaspoon, the set is defined by each utensil's skeletal form, which sees a series of exaggerated curves and bends shaped into functional instruments that may also be hooked onto other objects in the kitchen. Dutch designer Maarten Baas' spontaneous, almost childlike shapes are front and centre in this 16-piece cutlery set for Valerie_objects. Featuring unbrushed stainless steel knives, forks, tablespoons and teaspoons, the set presents an aesthetic that is both impulsive and sketchy — the designer himself likens the forms to those often found in the rapid sketches at the design stage that are often lost in the production process. Case in point: the erratic serrations on the knife-edge — simple to draw, yet challenging to craft in reality. The set comes in a wooden gift box.
